Rooted and Built Up In Him (Col 1-2)

Paul’s letter to the Colossians is a powerful declaration of the supremacy of Jesus Christ over all other religious rituals, practices, and traditions. The early Christians in Colossae were giving heed to those who urged them to participate in what seems like an eclectic mix of Jewish, mystical, and pagan traditions which included worship of angels, seeking mystical visions, and strict dietary practices.

Paul’s message to the Colossians is to “remain grounded and steadfast in the faith” and not be “shifted away from the hope of the gospel that you heard.” Col 1:22. This message is so relevant for us today. Christ and Christ alone is the answer to the yearnings of our soul. We must not add “philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elements of the world, rather than Christ.” Col 2:8. Instead, we must “continue to walk in him, being rooted and built up in him and established in the faith.” Col 2:6-7.

There will always be those voices trying to add onto the message of Christ crucified. There will always be those promoting additional rituals and ceremonies and traditions that will make us more holy or more pure. But these traditions are empty of any power. These practice of “self-made religion” have the “reputation for wisdom” but “are not of any value in curbing self indulgence Col 2:23. We need to keep our eyes focused– rivited– on Christ and Christ alone.
